Let’s Learn Together, Again
Most training rooms feel like a place you survive, not somewhere you grow. Too often, they’re filled with PowerPoints, policies, and people counting down the clock. Somewhere along the way, we forgot that learning is about people, not just the presentation of facts and figures.
The Classroom Shouldn’t Feel Like a Punishment
Mandatory training doesn’t have to feel like time served. When we prioritize interaction, reflection, and conversation, the room shifts. People start leaning in.
I've heard it said that people only remember 10% what they read, 20% of what they hear, and 30% of what they see. When we add hearing and seeing, people will remember 50%, and when they start talking about the topic, the recall rate increases to 70%. When there's a simulation involved, people will remember 90% of what they say and do!
Connection is Key
But what about deeper learning? Negative emotions in the classroom, like shame and fear, cause a "choke" effect to occur when the student is placed in a stressful environment. And the absence of caring, engagement, and interest can hinder learning (King, 2012). Creating an engaging environment makes a difference. One study by Sagayadevan and Jeyaraj (2012) found that when an instructor promotes positive interactions with the students, the students are more emotionally engaged in the learning process. Essentially, instructors who connect with learners on a relational level enhance student motivation to learn.
Real People, Real Conversations
I’ve had skeptics in the room with arms crossed, waiting for the day to end. But when you create space for honest and vulnerable discussions, even the most reserved participants start opening up. These moments matter, especially when you discuss feelings, the other 'F' word. We are reminded that we’re not alone in our stress, our struggles, or our search for balance.
It’s Not Just First Responders
Health care professionals, corrections officers, educators, and even grad students walk into classrooms carrying invisible weight. What they need isn’t another checklist of Do's and Don'ts. They need reassurance that their well-being matters. My talks are designed for high-stress professions because everyone deserves to feel human at work.
The Goal: Leave Lighter Than You Arrived
When done right, learning leaves people feeling heard, not hurried. We reconnect to our purpose. We remember why we started. We take something back that isn’t just practical, but personal. That’s the kind of impact I aim for in every workshop, every training, every keynote.
